Three arrested for trafficking displaced persons in Unity state

Community leaders in the protection of civilians’ site in Rubkona area of Unity State have busted a human trafficking ring leading to the detention of six people.

Tot Riek, chairperson of the high-level committee in the internally displaced persons camp, said a 20- year- old woman was detained last week by police alongside two of her collaborators for attempting to traffic under-aged girls in the internally displaced persons camp.

He disclosed that police tracked and arrested two more traffickers suspected to have been part of the trafficking ring in unity oilfield and in Rubkon town.

“She told us that they were three in number, she was deployed in the protection of civilian site, one in unity oilfield area and one in Rubkona town, last month she managed to transport the three under aged girls to Juba airport who were handed over to someone in Juba,” Riek told Juba Echo on Friday in Rubkona town.

He said the victims were given unspecified sums of money and tickets to fly to Juba by the alleged trafficker.

Riek said the five girls were later on released from police detention and handed over to their parents, adding that the suspected human trafficker is still in police custody.

Parents in the internally displaced persons camp had for long been registering cases of missing children, but the latest incident has led to many to believe that some of their children have been trafficked.
