Polic of Northern Bahr El Ghazal State said on Sunday that a 44- year -old male suspect shot himself dead while in police custody at Wunlang payam of Aweil East County.
Pinyding Makuach Kuol, the director of police in the state said that the deceased Kuol Deng was in detention on suspicion of committing adultery.
He said that the suspect prior to taking his life had asked the officer in charge to allow him to change clothing. Makuach claimed the deceased later on disarmed the police officer in charge and shot himself dead.
“The common scenarios are issues of people who hang themselves but such cases of inmates killing themselves with rifles are uncommon and are uncalled for,” Makuach told Juba Echo in Aweil town.
He revealed that the police officer whose gun was used by the deceased to commit suicide has been arrested.
In 2022, an old inmate in Madhol payam prison located in Aweil East County committed suicide by hanging himself with his own cloth.
