Women in Northern Bahr el Ghazal state have been encouraged to participate in the transitional justice process.
The women attended a two-day workshop on chapter five of the 2018 revitalized peace agreement organized by local NGO-Center for inclusive governance, peace and justice organization in Aweil town that closed on Wednesday.
Chapter five covers transitional justice, reconciliation and Healing.
One of the trainees, Wek Chuei Lang, the chair of the labor committee in the state parliament, said that they learnt a lot about the involvement of women in the peace process and elections scheduled for December 2024.
“Women have a great role to play in the government. They can do what the men do as well. They give birth to children and they take care of them till they grow up to become adults who serve the nation. So they have to be included in governance,” Lang told The Juba Echo.
He said women should not excluded in government, adding their voices matter a lot in governance.
Elizabeth Nyanut, the director for the center for inclusive governance, peace and justice organization, said the training informed women and civil society activists about the pending tasks that have yet to be implemented in the peace agreement.
She encouraged women to fight for their right to participate in peace implementation and also compete for leadership positions during elections.
The parties to the 2018 revitalized peace agreement are yet to complete the security arrangements, establishment of the National Election Commission, and enactment the permanent constitution and also enactment of electoral laws and institutions.
