The death toll following deadly inter-communal fighting on Thursday in the Malakal protection of civilians site (PoC) has reached 17.
The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) revealed in a statement, saying 17 people have died from the violent inter-communal clashes that erupted on Thursday morning in the Malakal PoC.
“We will keep adjusting as we get more confirmations. Some of those injured are still receiving medical treatment in UNMISS Level II among other hospitals. At least 7000 IDPs who left the PoC are still temporarily settled around and outside the UNMISS and humanitarian camps,” it said.
The peacekeeping mission on Thursday called for calm after three people were confirmed killed and dozens of others injured.
The initial fighting erupted on May 28th at a water point at the Malakal PoC site leaving three people killed.
It said the situation has calmed, adding that the government and the international community are maintaining vigilance to prevent any further escalation and to provide stronger security.
“United Nations personnel are working collaboratively with the state authorities and the SSPDF to find sustainable solutions and to restore the trust of the vulnerable populations, humanitarians keep providing support to the IDPs and police-military peacekeepers are conducting day and night patrol to secure the place,” it said.
