The Executive Director of the Center for Peace and Advocacy (CPA) called upon President Salva Kiir and First Vice President Riek Machar to build on the recently gained momentum after they agreed to reverse some key bills enacted in the absence of the main opposition party (SPLM-IO).
“A majority of South Sudanese have lost confidence in the R-TGoNU since its formation in February 2020, because the cost of living remains the same which makes them feel unoptimistic for the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity,” Ter Manyang Gatwech said in a statement issued in Juba on Monday.
He said that South Sudanese aspirations remain yet to be fulfilled by their leaders due to lack of political will between President Kiir and Machar for the last two decades in the country.
President Kiir and Machar held last week face-to-face meeting in Juba on the pending critical issues in the 2018 revitalized peace agreement.
Manyang warned that both Kiir and Machar have sole responsibility to restore hope and confidence among citizens in order to transition the country from war period towards sustainable peace and prosperity.
“We acknowledge the relative peace in the country and therefore, let the two leaders prove to the world wrong that they are capable of ushering in permanent peace without IGAD, AU, and the international community,” he said.
Manyang urged the U.S government to reconsider it’s recent decision to withhold financial support toward the peace monitoring mechanisms over what Washington alleged was due to lack of political will from the parties to conclude the peace process.
