The chief executive officer of Light for the World, Rupert Roniger has revealed commitment to eradicate discrimination against persons with disability.
He said these remarks on Friday at Dami Primary School in Mangateen camp for internally displaced people in Juba.
Roniger recently visited Western Bahr el Ghazal State to assess the conditions of persons with disability.
“There are things to be improved. There are many, many children out of schools especially the vulnerable groups and children with disability and I think we can change this together,” he said.
Roniger disclosed the need to promote gender equity through education, empowerment, health, climate action and humanitarian relief.
“It’s important to come to South Sudan to see the challenges facing people with disability, what we can do together to improve because we believe that every human being has potential,” he said.
Adding that people with disabilities can contribute positively to society.
Roniger said that he met with the minister of gender, children and social welfare where they discussed the need for South Sudan to ratify the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability.
He revealed that the ratification of the convention would mitigate the challenges faced by people with disability in the country.
He said that it’s important for person living with disabilities to access to health, education and special protection.
Sophie Mohammed, country director of Light for the World, said that they discussed with representative of the ministries of gender and education, and other stakeholders on the implementation of social inclusion of people with disability.
In addition, he said they called for improvement in advocacy and economic empowerment for persons with disability within the Republic of South Sudan.
